View Full Version : ELT Antenna for Discus 2

April 18th 07, 03:49 PM
I'm in the process of researching ELT's for my Discus 2. Problem is
with all that carbon fiber, I don't know were to install the antenna.
Any suggestions?
Zulu

P.S. Wags with alternate suggestions as to where to stick the
antenna, please remember this is a family site.

I hope you solve this Zulu. I have an ELT sitting on the shelf because
I can't figure out where to put the antenna in my V2C.

The previous owner of my Discus 2 installed a rubber duckie antenna
adjacent to the right rear canopy. While perhaps not a perfect
solution, it does appear to work.

On the D2b, left side on the 'seat back" bulkhead. It curves a little
to the contour of the turtle deck. The wire then passes thru the
bulkhead to the unit. I've seen this placement on several types of
gliders. R

I'm not certain but isn't the fuselage above the turtle
deck (black painted) GRP for this very reason? I have
a GPS antenna and an ELT (short rubber duck type) under
there in my D2cT and both seem to work fine.

I did a bit of testing with a meter that measured output of a rubber duckie
in my D2 using a variety of sites. Bottom line is that the antenna should
be ideally placed vetically in open site to the sky. Any place shielded by
the carbon fibre is useless. Two sites seemed ok. One is to mount it
along the canopy rail and the other is under the glare shield. Mine is
under the shield and mounted on a bracket and slightly tilted (about 45
degrees). Try to keep it away from any metal.
